Peoples Corners

The People’s Corner is the public’s gateway to understanding the human dimension of marine conservation under the ASEAN ENMAPS Project. This dedicated space shines a light on the invaluable roles and stories of coastal Indigenous Peoples and local communities, especially women and youth, in protecting our marine ecosystems. Their dedication and passion for protecting marine ecosystems extend beyond activism—they are shaping the future of our oceans.

Women leaders play a pivotal role in steering conservation projects and policies, often as grassroots organizers who mobilize communities for action. Their leadership ensures that the voices of marginalized groups are heard, and they bring forward the importance of equitable and inclusive approaches to environmental protection.

Youth advocates are the catalysts for innovation and sustainability, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the table. Their campaigns inspire global awareness and empower future generations to continue the work of conservation. They are not just raising awareness—they are taking tangible actions, from coastal cleanups to advocating for stronger environmental policies.

Indigenous knowledge holders bring invaluable insights into sustainable practices that have been passed down through generations. Their deep connection to the land and sea allows them to manage natural resources with wisdom and respect, and their contributions to biodiversity conservation are indispensable.

In addition to the leadership of these groups, the voices of coastal community members are essential in understanding the direct impact of marine conservation on local livelihoods. Many rely on healthy marine ecosystems for their daily sustenance and economic well-being. These personal stories highlight the profound connection between conservation efforts and community resilience, as well as the challenges and rewards of living in harmony with the sea.
